Juvenile arrests have been declining

As a parent, you worry that you are eventually going to get a call from your child saying that they have been arrested. It's not that they're a troublemaker, but you remember being a teen. You know that teens sometimes make poor decisions, especially in the face of peer pressure. You did. Your child could as well.

Among other things, you're worried about what kind of impact an arrest and certainly a conviction could have on their future. Will they have a permanent record? Will they be able to go to college? Will they be able to obtain a needed scholarship? How will this impact their career path? You do not want one mistake to ruin their future, especially in the age of social media when it seems like there are very few secrets.

It may help you to know that juvenile arrest rates have been trending down. They fell by about 25% between 2013 and 2017. Even just looking at the data from 2016 and 2017, the arrest rate dropped by nearly 5%. The number of arrests for all offenses dropped between 2008 and 2017 by a staggering 59%.

That does not mean there is no risk. In 2017, even after all of that decline, 809,700 young people were arrested. It could happen to your child. Thousands of parents get that phone call every day.

If it happens to you and your family, it is very important to know about all of the legal options that you have. An experienced criminal defense attorney can work to help protect your child's future.
