An arrest is made in a December Upper Marlboro assault case

A Laurel woman was taken into custody by the Prince George's County Sheriff's Office (PGCSO) on May 21. She now faces first and second-degree assault charges.

PGCSO officers were dispatched to a home located on Baltimore Avenue on Dec.r 4 of last year. When they arrived there, they found an unidentified female victim who said that the defendant had physically and verbally assaulted her. She was transported to an area hospital for treatment of her injuries.

At least one witness to the incident claimed to have seen a female walk up to the victim and scream at them. Soon after that, the argument escalated into a physical altercation where the defendant repeatedly struck her victim. Officers investigating the incident were also later able to recover video footage corroborating what the victim and witness said had occurred.

The investigation into the incident continued until May 13 when PGCSO officers were able to obtain an arrest warrant for the assailant. It took until May 21 for them to track her down. They responded to a home located on Laurel Race Track Road and knocked on the door. Their suspect answered the door and was taken into custody without incident.

They placed her in their patrol car where she was taken to Prince George's County Department of Corrections. The defendant only initially faced a first-degree assault charge. At the time of her booking, she was also charged with second-degree assault, though, as well. It's unclear what may have motivated officers to add additional charges. Her next hearing date is unknown.

Assault and battery charges are taken very seriously by Maryland prosecutors. Individuals who are convicted of such violent crimes may face significant fines and serious jail time. A criminal record may impact your ability to acquire a job and may adversely impact your lifestyle in many other ways.

Individuals who are facing assault and battery charges should consult with a criminal defense attorney. They can advise them of defense strategies that they may be able to pursue in their Dunkirk court case.
