Don't get busted for drunk driving this holiday weekend

As we cruise on into the Memorial Day weekend, it's a good idea to remind the residents of Prince Georges County to be careful not to get arrested on drunk driving charges.

All over Maryland and the rest of the United States, there will be an increased police presence on the highways and secondary roads. Officers will be checking for seat belt usage and impaired driving.

While there is nothing wrong with enjoying your favorite adult beverage while manning the grill or relaxing with friends and family, it becomes a big problem if you drink and then get behind the wheel of your vehicle.

The penalties here for a DUI arrest are steep and the consequences are far-reaching. While it's obviously better to avoid the situation entirely, should you get stopped by the police this weekend (or ever) on suspicion of drunk driving, here are some tips to remember.

Don't perform field sobriety tests

There are many reasons for refusing, including the subjective nature of such tests and many people's inability to perform them correctly regardless of their sobriety. Politely decline on the advice of your attorney.

Don't volunteer information or lie to the police

Remember that you have a Constitutional right to remain silent and not self-incriminate.

Remain calm and polite during your entire interaction with the police

There is nothing to be gained — ever — by resisting arrest. When that is the inevitable result of a traffic stop, submit to the officers and ask to speak to your attorney.

If you face drunk driving charges, we can help you launch a stalwart defense to the allegations. See our website for more information on your criminal defense options.
