It's time to turn over all your unused prescription drugs

Every year, the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) joints forces with local agencies to provide citizens with a safe -- and legal -- way to dispose of their prescription drugs.

Prescription drug addiction is a serious problem in the United States. A lot of times, addiction starts because people gain access to "leftover" medication that's sitting around a friend's or relative's medicine drawer.

At the same time, if you've been on medication of any kind that you've discontinued and you have leftover pills sitting around, you know you can't simply throw them away. Not only do you risk contaminating the local water supply, you also risk contributing further to someone's addiction. Addicts have been known to go through people's trash just to look for narcotics and other types of high-inducing drugs.

The best way to dispose of your unused and unwanted prescription medication is through the national "Take-Back" program. This year, the date falls on April 27. In Prince George's County, there are two locations you can use to drop off your unused medication:

  • Maryland State Police Barrack in College Park
  • Maryland State Police Barrack in Forestville

Simply gather all your medication that you want to take back in their original containers and hand deliver them to the officer on duty at the collection point.

Ultimately, you're not just doing a good deed for your environment and your community, you could be taking an important stand against addiction in your own family. You don't want anyone you know and love to end up addicted to drugs after experimenting on whatever they found sitting around your home. Drug addiction is the most frequent underlying reason for drug charges, so you'll be protecting your loved ones' future in numerous ways.
