How often does crime happen at school?

You send your child to school, hoping it will be a safe place with good influences. Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Your child could find themselves in a compromising position and could even be accused of a crime.

To get a better idea of the picture of criminal behavior in schools, let's take a look at one study that centered on the school year from 2015 to 2016. When looking at public schools, which most children attend, a full 79 percent said that they had one or more criminal incidents during the year. These included things like violence and theft.

Clearly, the odds of criminal activity are high. It happens at most schools and totaled a staggering 1.4 million crimes during that school year. Overall, that is a crime rate of 28 incidents for every 1,000 students who went to school that year or 2.8 incidents for every 100 enrolled students.

How many criminal activities actually lead to police interventions? Roughly half of the public schools (47 percent) called the police about one or more crimes over the course of the year. Police got a total of 449,000 reports. That's a rate of nine crimes reported to the police for every 1,000 students enrolled in public schools all over the country.

Has your child been accused of breaking the law at school? Did the police get called? Are you worried about the impact these allegations are going to have on their future? If so, it is very important to make sure you understand all of the criminal defense options your child has.
