Taking a look at the types of cybercrimes

Cybercrimes have become more prominent over the last 10-plus years and they continue to take new forms as thieves become smarter and more determined. Thieves are also targeting older victims who might be a little more trusting than those who know what to look for when spotting a scam. Let's take a look at the different types of cybercrimes in today's post.

The most common type of cybercrime is a phishing scam. A phishing scam is something that looks to be legitimate but is actually a scam that steals your information. It phishes for your information, all of which is personal and can lead to you losing quite a bit of money. Phishing scams create mocks of legitimate companies such as PayPal or Venmo and it is typically a bad link.

Another type of cybercrime involves the sale of fake prescriptions, merchandise and other products governed by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Purchasing counterfeit medication online can lead to dire consequences, especially if the medicine has the wrong ingredients in it.

Other cybercrimes involve sex trafficking, child pornography and fraud. Some fraudulent actions committed online involve money laundering and embezzlement. Cybercrimes can be committed by anyone with access to the internet and a computer. There's no definitive age group of someone who has been charged with a cybercrime.

Cybercrimes can land a suspect in jail for quite some time if convicted. The crimes also come with hefty fines for offenders. Make sure you know what to avoid when operating online so you can avoid being charged as a suspect of a cybercrime in Maryland.
