Maryland heroin laws: What you need to know

Just the same as every other state, heroin laws in Maryland are meant to control this crime.

While many people are familiar with the drug problem in inner cities, such as Baltimore, heroin use remains an issue throughout the entire state.

Possession of even a small amount of heroin in Maryland can lead to serious trouble, including a large fine and a prison sentence.

The possession of heroin can be charged as either a misdemeanor or felony. However, the sale and/or trafficking of heroin is always a felony.

For example, a person convicted of selling a small amount of heroin could face a prison sentence of up to 20 years along with a fine of up to $25,000.

It's not always an option, but there are times when a person can take advantage of drug court as a means of avoiding a prison sentence. With this approach, people can receive treatment for their problem while ensuring that they don't spend any time in prison.

At our law firm, we're well aware of the seriousness of heroin-related crimes in the state of Maryland. We're also aware that this remains a major issue throughout the state.

Over the years, we have helped many people who have been charged with this type of crime. For example, there are times when a person is charged with selling heroin when possession was the only crime.

If you are charged with any type of heroin-related crime, it's imperative to learn why this happened and then determine the steps you can take to protect your legal rights.
