Carjackings in Maryland reportedly go up in August

If residents in Maryland have been wondering when they are mostly likely to experience a carjacking, a new report indicates that it may in fact be during the month of August. This report was put out by the Governor's Office of Crime Control and Prevention as a joint effort with the Maryland State Police.

The report looks at the data that was collected for 2012. In that year, there were a grand total of 473 instances in which a carjacking occurred. The majority of those took place between the hours of six in the evening and one in the morning. On top of that, a full 28 percent of the carjackings happened on the weekend.

In light of this, the local police have begun to offer advice to drivers to help them out. First of all, they reminded them of the importance of being vigilant and aware at all times. On top of that, the police said that drivers should always put safety first, acknowledging that any sort of attempted crime has a chance to become a violent crime.

Some tips included telling drivers to stay out of areas without good lighting and visibility, locking the doors and always having the car's windows rolled up and never fighting back over the car when the person trying to take it has a weapon.

In cases in which people are told to drive the car with the carjacker also inside, police said that it could be a good idea to get into a minor accident when going through an intersection.

Anyone facing criminal charges for a carjacking still has a right to a fair trial. They deserve their day in court, and their rights as a citizen must be upheld throughout.
