What does the Violent Crimes Against Children Program focus on?

The Federal Bureau of Investigation has a special division known as the Violent Crimes Against Children Program. Its goals including providing a faster response when children are involved. It was officially started in 2000, though it has its roots in other programs from the mid 1990s.

The VCACP focuses on a few different types of activity, including:

-- Abductions of children and kidnappings-- Enterprises that are based around the sexual exploitation of children, such as domestic child prostitution-- Crimes known as contact offenses, such as traveling with children for the purpose of sexual activity or traveling to meet up with children for the same purpose-- The creation of child pornography-- The distribution of child pornography; the program will also look into possession without the intent to distribute.-- Parental kidnapping, both within the United States and internationally-- And numerous other crimes that are focused on minors and young children

The basis for this program came about due to some crimes that were tracked back in 1993. Suspects who had been sexually exploiting children were investigated, and this led to the discovery of a computer-based system in which minors were contacted and explicit images were exchanged. In response, the Innocent Images National Initiative was created in 1995, and this led to the Violent Crimes Against Children Program five years later.

All those who are investigated by this program and accused of these crimes still have the same rights to a fair trial as anyone else in Maryland, and it's important for them to be aware of these rights and their legal options.
