Maryland men charged with drug trafficking

A recent Maryland traffic stop for speeding led to far more serious charges for the 24-year-old driver and his 58-year-old passenger.

The driver, a Bowie resident, faces charges of drug trafficking after Anne Arundel County police stopped his Dodge Magnum in Gambrills about 12:18 a.m. on State Route 3 South at Maryland Route 75.

The police charged the driver with driving on a suspended license with a suspended registration, open container of alcohol, possession of heroin and cocaine, possession with intent to distribute heroin and cocaine, CDS paraphernalia and driving under the influence of alcohol/CDS.

His passenger, a resident of Upper Marlboro, was charged with possession of both heroin and cocaine and possession with intent to distribute cocaine, open container of alcohol and CDS paraphernalia.

Police seized drug paraphernalia in the car and on the person of the driver, 21 capsules of suspected crack (29.20 grams), nine capsules of suspected heroin (2.52 grams) and an additional bag of suspected crack weighing over 3.5 grams.

While all drug charges are serious matters, being accused of drug trafficking can result in years of imprisonment if convicted. Simply being arrested on charges such as these can be life-altering and can affect employment, child custody arrangements and significant relationships in the accused's life.

If you are arrested on drug charges, remember to preserve your right against self-incrimination by not making any statements to the police. Remain silent after invoking your right to speak to counsel.

A skilled Maryland criminal defense attorney is often able to mount successful evidentiary challenges to the prosecution's case, including challenging the state's chain of command regarding potential evidence against defendants. Never accept any deal offered by prosecutors without first consulting with your attorney.
