Bribery and drug accusations made against jail officers

Usually, people envision criminals on one side and law enforcement officials on the other. However, a high-profiledrug charges case finds gang members and jail officials on the same side, collaborating in the transfer of cash and drugs.

The situation has been occurring in the Baltimore city jail. There, correction officers allegedly worked with members of a prison gang to get them drugs and phones. Fourteen of the officers were indicted, and prosecutors expressed hope that the illicit activities would end.

According to the U.S. Attorney's Office for Maryland, the gang involved is called the Black Guerilla Family. They are said to have arranged similar situations in other jails for years.

In addition to the transfer of drugs and phones, leading gang members also had affairs with female correctional officers. Indeed, one gang member got four different female correctional officers pregnant in a short period of time. Their reported devotion to him was so notable that one even tattooed his name on her wrist.

That gang member, Tavon White, was understood to be the ringleader. He repeatedly made statements about being in charge at the jail, saying every deal and any act of violence had to be approved by him.

The correctional officers accused of smuggling items to prisoners allegedly did so by hiding those items under their close, as well as in sandwiches and in unspecified body cavities, according to official reports.

Officers are also said to have been complicit in a protection racket. That racket would involve coercing relatives of inmates to pay in order to keep their relatives safe. If so, that activity will add to the list of charges filed in the case.

Drug charges cases occur every year in Maryland. Each case is unique, and anyone involved in such cases should seek an attorney right away. The right attorney can help build a strong defense and bring all mitigating facts to light.
